Singapore Budget 2025 Infographics

Date

March 2025

Description

This project got a sponsor from DBS! It delivers a first-of-its-kind interactive exploration of Singapore's 2025 Budget, featuring allocations, expenditures, and key financial data using a node based system. It allow users to explore seamlessly through the budget, along with animations that clearly explain abstract terms like balances and fiscal positions.

Problem statement

Government budget documents are notoriously complex and difficult for the average citizen to understand. Traditional budget presentations often consist of dense tables, lengthy PDF documents, and technical terminology that creates barriers to public comprehension. This lack of accessibility prevents citizens from engaging meaningfully with how their tax dollars are being allocated and spent.

The challenge was to create a visualization that could:
• Transform hierarchical budget data into an intuitive, visual format
• Enable users to explore budget categories at different levels of detail
• Present multiple perspectives on the budget (fiscal position, balances, special transfers)
• Work seamlessly across desktop and mobile devices
• Load and parse large datasets efficiently from CSV files
• Provide real-time updates as users interact with different budget categories

Additionally, the solution needed to integrate with The Business Times' existing infrastructure and maintain consistency with their brand identity while providing a modern, engaging user experience.

KEY FEATURES

Multi-Section Navigation
Three distinct visualization sections allow users to explore different aspects of the budget: Fiscal Position (revenue and expenditure), Balances (inflows vs outflows), and Special Transfers (one-off government transfers).

Interactive Bubble Tree Visualizations
Hierarchical budget data is presented as interactive bubble trees where bubble size represents monetary value. Users can click through different levels to drill down into specific budget categories and subcategories.

Dynamic Data Loading
CSV data parsing system that dynamically loads and structures budget data from multiple sources. The system handles hierarchical relationships, color coding, and previous year comparisons.

Contextual Information Display
Right-side panel provides contextual descriptions and detailed information that updates dynamically as users interact with different nodes in the visualization, offering insights into each budget category.

Responsive Design
Fully responsive layout that adapts to different screen sizes, ensuring optimal viewing experience on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. The visualization scales intelligently based on viewport dimensions.

URL-Based Navigation
Browser history integration allows users to bookmark specific sections and share direct links to particular views of the budget data, enhancing shareability and user experience.

Special Transfers Table
Dedicated table view for special transfers that displays detailed breakdowns of one-off government transfers, including package names and amounts, with hierarchical categorization support.

Custom Styling & Branding
Custom CSS styling using Tailwind CSS that aligns with The Business Times' brand identity, including custom fonts (Poppins), color schemes, and visual design elements.
